Betty Jo DeWitt

Betty Jo DeWitt, a loving wife, dedicated mother, and cherished member of the community, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on June 18, 2024, in Waukee, Iowa. She was born on June 6, 1939, in Bonaparte, Iowa, to William Lee and Lorene (Wilson) Chapman.

Betty graduated from Bonaparte High School. She would go on to build a successful career as the kitchen manager for Crestview Acres in West Des Moines. After "retirement", she continued to stay busy by working at the Waukee Fareway. One of Betty's proudest accomplishments was marrying the love of her life, James DeWitt, on February 28, 1959, in Bonaparte. Together they moved to Waukee in 1964. Their love story was a beacon of strength and devotion for all who knew them.

Betty found joy in supporting the Kansas Chiefs and Chicago Cubs through their victories and challenges. However, her greatest joy came from nurturing her family. She delighted in cooking for them and organizing grand family reunions where she could create lasting memories with all her loved ones.

Betty is survived by her daughter Janice (John) Jordan of Sun City West, AZ; son Jim Jr. (Melody) DeWitt of Sun City West, AZ; grandchildren Jeff Jordan, Jason (Alexandra) Jordan, Matthew (Cassie) DeWitt, Jessica (Doug Bremer) Stacy and Ryan DeWitt; great-grandchildren Chelsea and Riley DeWitt and Amelia Jordan; as well as brothers Robert Chapman of Florida and Randy Chapman of Davenport. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James; daughter Teresa Hoffman and sister Janet Givens.

Funeral services to honor Betty's life will take place at Ernst Funeral Home located at 80 NE Dartmoor Drive in Waukee, Iowa. A visitation will be held on June 22, 2024, starting at 12:00 PM followed by a Funeral Service at 1:00 PM. Betty will be laid to rest following the service at the Waukee Cemetery.
