Carl Martin Hoffert, affectionately known as Marty, passed away on April 29, 2025, in his beloved hometown of Newton, Iowa. Born on June 7, 1952, in Newton, Marty dedicated his life to family, community service, and a distinguished career in public service.

Marty’s work ethic began to take shape during his high school years when he began working at HyVee. Following his graduation from Newton High School, he joined the Newton Waterworks, where he climbed the ranks from Operator to Director of Field Operations, ultimately retiring in May of 2021 after an admirable 50-year career. His exemplary service in this role earned him recognition through several prestigious awards from the American Water Works Association (AWWA), including the Operator's Meritorious Service Award and the George Warren Fuller Award. Under his leadership, Newton Waterworks was honored as “Best Tasting Water in Iowa” in 2006.

Throughout his life, Marty was deeply committed to volunteerism, contributing significantly to the community in various capacities. He served as President of Little League, President of Babe Ruth, and President of the Booster Club. Moreover, he held the position of President of Rotary, and Region 5 Chairperson and Director of the AWWA. His passion for educating others about water treatment processes was exemplified through his assistance at the Iowa Children's Water Works Festival and by giving tours at the Water Plant.

Marty’s greatest pride was his family. He married his high school sweetheart, Rae Ann Jenkins, on April 6, 1974. Together, they nurtured a loving family which included their son, Andy Hoffert, and daughter, Heidi Woollums. Marty was a devoted father who loved coaching his children in various youth sports, including baseball, flag football, softball, soccer, basketball, and volleyball. He remained their staunch supporter throughout all levels of their athletic endeavors, and later, he took immense joy in attending every activity his grandchildren, Delaney and Ty Woollums, participated in, always present on the sidelines. His nurturing spirit was evident in his encouragement of Delaney's love for nature, often bringing home creatures like tree frogs, bull snakes, salamanders, dead birds and walking sticks, which inspired her to pursue a career as a Naturalist in college.

In his spare time, Marty was a man of diverse interests. He cherished spending quality time with Rae Ann, appreciating her presence even amidst daily routines. His passion for old cars was well-known, and his garage, lovingly referred to as the "Garage Mahal," stood as a testament to that enthusiasm. Additionally, Marty found enjoyment in watching sports, particularly football, baseball, and NASCAR, and was an avid viewer of educational channels, including Nova, the History Channel, and Discovery Channel.

Marty leaves behind his wife, Rae Ann Hoffert of Newton, IA; son, Andy Hoffert (Becky) of Norman, OK; daughter, Heidi Woollums (Wayne) of Newton, IA; granddaughter, Delaney Woollums of Newton, IA; grandson, Ty Woollums of Newton, IA; brother, Jon Hoffert (Kristy) of Ankeny, IA; sister-in-law, Susan Hoffert of Newton, IA; and aunt, Martha Froah (Dale) of Newton, IA, who grew up like a sister to him, along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Carl Hoffert; mother, Betty Hoffert; brother, Mark Hoffert; father-in-law, Keith Jenkins; and mother-in-law, Mary Ann Jenkins.
