David Ray Thornburg Jr., born on April 24, 1965, in Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on June 21, 2025, in Waukee, Iowa. A devoted son, father, brother and an active member of his community. David's life was characterized by his strong sense of duty, passion for helping others and dedication to his family.
Before spending the last several years of his life in Waukee David grew up in Winterset and began his military career in the U.S. Army his senior year before graduating high school in 1984. Shortly after, David married Christy Henry (Winterset) in 1985 and would later divorce but in that union birthed children David, Crystal, Ashley and Rebecca. Throughout his life he dedicated himself to the service of his country and to his community, proudly serving in the U.S. Army, National Guard, and Reserves, in fact, he always said he wished he could have stayed in longer and accomplished more. After retirement, David continued his commitment to veterans through his extensive volunteer work with the Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.) and numerous other veterans' causes, even holding the esteemed title of Department State Commander five times.
David's career as a flooring installer with Ralph N. Smith, Inc. was marked by his strong work ethic and dedication. He was known not just for his skills in flooring but was generally a strong leader in everything he applied himself to. He also brought humor to the lives of those he loved when they needed it and didn’t even know it. His family and friends will remember him as someone who cherished life and was always eager to lend a helping hand when needed.
His proudest accomplishment was witnessing the joy of his children and grandchildren which remained his top priority throughout his life. David had a deep love for all things Elvis and even made it out to Graceland a couple times over the years to honor his favorite musician. Additionally, he looked forward to and cherished the time spent catching up with high school buddies at breakfast gatherings.
David is survived by his son, David Thornburg III of Waukee; daughters Crystal (Carlos) Matias of Tacoma, WA, Ashley Thornburg of Waukee, and Rebecca Thornburg (Jake) of Norwalk; parents David Sr. and Mary Thornburg of Winterset; brother Randy (Mindy) Thornburg Sr. of Truro; brother Audie Thornburg of West Des Moines; and sister Rayann (Gordy) Hughes of Creston.
