Douglas Smitley

Douglas Ray Smitley, 66 of Waukee, passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at his home.

Doug was born to Allen and Janice Smitley on January 21, 1957.  He attended Grandview College before graduating from Iowa State University.  In 2006, he married Sharon Hurst.  Doug was a skilled painter and owned his own company, Doug Smitley Painting, for many years.

Doug loved fishing, especially at Leech Lake in Minnesota.  He was an avid Skeet Shooter until recently when he had to quit due to health reasons.  Doug and Sharon traveled to skeet tournaments in a variety of states, where they made numerous dear friends and where he won many trophies and awards.

Doug is survived by his spouse Sharon; father Allen; sister Lori; sister-in-law Tricia Snyder; children from his previous marriage, Shane and Sheena and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Visitation will be Sunday, February 19, 2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and a funeral service on Monday, February 20, 2023 at 10:00 a.m., both at Ernst Funeral Home, Waukee.  Interment to follow at the Waukee Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to the family or New Pioneer Gun Club.
