Francis Eugene Freeborn

Francis Eugene Freeborn, 86, of Urbandale, Iowa passed away Friday, August 11, 2023, at Cedar Ridge Village in West Des Moines, IA.  Francis was born October 17, 1936, in rural Poweshiek County, the son of Lester W. and Vyvenne (Warwick) Freeborn.  Francis graduated in 1954 from Barnes City High School. 

Francis was a dedicated son, husband, father, stepfather and grandfather who always put his family first.  In 1959, at the age of 22, he began working at Montezuma Mutual Telephone Company, and retired after 50 years.  He was extremely dedicated to his career and community. There was never a day he didn’t enjoy his work and helping others within the community.  Francis served on the Iowa Telephone Association Board and the Montezuma City Council.

Francis was passionate about golf and enjoyed playing several courses across the United States. Francis’s competitive spirit earned him several awards and accolades when playing competitively.  He also enjoyed bowling and refereeing for multiple sports. Francis loved his family and attended every sport and activity his children and grandchildren participated in that he could. He and his wife Linda enjoyed spending winters in Arizona.

Francis is survived by his wife of 38 years, Linda Freeborn; two sons, Todd (Sheryl) Freeborn and Troy Freeborn; three step-daughters, Courtney (Karl) Williamson, Katrisha Heidemann and Kristen (Jason) Hatcher; ten grandchildren, Shannon (Billy) Fox, Seth (Lexi) Freeborn, Krystal (Adam) Talbert, Colin (Kiegan) Watts, Jack Freeborn, Ava Freeborn, Taylor (Allison) Williamson, Alex (Maddy) Williamson, Kade Hatcher and Konner Hatcher; and seven great grandchildren.  He is also survived by Doris (Sheldon) Freeborn and many nieces and nephews.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings: Bonnie and Sheldon.

A private memorial service will be held for the family.  Francis will be laid to rest at the Waukee Columbarium.  Memorial Donations may be made in Francis' memory to: Montezuma Country Club, PO Box 12, Montezuma, IA 50171.

Ernst Funeral & Cremation Services of Waukee has been entrusted with Francis' final arrangements.
