With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of John Michael Harrington, Jr., affectionately known as Mike, who left this world on November 28, 2024, in Des Moines, Iowa. Born on April 1, 1957, in Des Moines, Mike spent his life surrounded by family and friends, making lasting memories that will be forever cherished.
While Mike had a wide variety of talents, passions, and interests, he gave the most energy to those involving the people that he loved. His greatest joy came from marrying the love of his life, Kellie Marie Riley, on May 27, 1978, at the Basilica of St. John in Des Moines, and creating their shared life and family, which brought them great happiness and fulfillment. Together, they raised their two sons John and Brian and later enjoyed countless special and amazing times with their three grandchildren. From Little League prep to early guitar and drum lessons, he was their wise mentor and proud, loving supporter. Mike was regarded by all who knew him as kind, loyal, and accepting of people for whom and where they were. He was known for great storytelling and loved to spin life stories for family and friends.
Mike was a lifelong Des Moines resident, a proud graduate of Des Moines Roosevelt High School, and loyal supporter of Drake University. He was a dedicated professional, having devoted over 25 years to the insurance industry with the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed playing softball and coaching his sons in baseball and football. Mike was an avid reader, passionate drummer and musician. Traveling with his beloved wife Kellie to Florida added joy to his life. He was a loyal fan of the Green Bay Packers and the New York Yankees, often sharing his enthusiasm for sports with those around him. Mike also held the title of Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus.
Mike leaves behind a loving family, including his wife, Kellie Marie Harrington; his sons, John Michael (Sara Elizabeth) Harrington III and Brian William Harrington; his siblings, Kevin Harrington, Mark Harrington, and Molly Harrington; and grandchildren Jack, Samuel, and Margaret Harrington, all of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents, John (Jack) Harrington Sr. and Norma Ruth Harrington, and his brother Timothy Harrington.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on December 9, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 4:00 p.m., both at the Basilica of St. John, located at 1915 University Ave, Des Moines, IA 50314. A private interment will be held at Glendale Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be directed to: Drake University Ray Center https://alumni.drake.edu/RayCenterSupport in Mike's memory.
As we remember Mike, let us hold close the memories of his laughter, his unwavering support, and the love he so freely shared. His spirit will continue to shine brightly in the lives of those he touched. Rest in peace, dear Mike. You will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered by all who know you.
