Waukee

We come together to honor and celebrate the remarkable life of Joyce Marie Potter Bridger, who passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, October 24, 2025. Joyce was born on July 5, 1945, in Leon, Iowa, to Wilfred (Jack) and Betty Potter. As the eldest of four children, she naturally took on the role of leader and caretaker — a reflection of her deep compassion and unwavering love that defined her throughout her life.

Joyce graduated from Mormon Trail High School in 1963 and continued her education at IBM College, where she developed the precision and professionalism that would shape her lifelong career. In November 1963, she began her journey with the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) — a career that spanned over 50 years. Joyce’s dedication and strong work ethic made her a cornerstone of the organization. She began in bookkeeping, later served as Officials Coordinator, and most notably excelled as Ticket Manager during the unforgettable era of six-player basketball at the sold-out Veterans Memorial Auditorium — fondly known as “The Barn.”

Her professionalism, attention to detail, and warmth earned her countless friendships with officials, coaches, and fans across Iowa. Joyce’s influence extended well beyond her job — she was a trusted colleague, a mentor, and a cherished friend who brought kindness and humor to every room she entered.

In October 1966, Joyce married the love of her life, John Olen Bridger, and together they shared more than 50 wonderful years of marriage filled with family and laughter. Their partnership was a model of love and commitment. Joyce and John built a beautiful family together — raising two children, Michal Jay Bridger (Mikael Jo) of Missoula, MT, and Cindy Rae Delaney (Kenneth) of Waukee, IA.

Joyce’s proudest title was that of Grandma to Bailey, Morgan, and Peyton, her three granddaughters who brought her endless joy. She loved playing games, cooking their favorite meals, and creating special memories — from trips and family outings to watching them catch their first fish. Her joy and encouragement were constants in their lives.

At home, Joyce took pride in her beautiful lawn, a trait lovingly inherited from her mother, Betty. She found joy in simple moments — family gatherings, card games, laughter-filled evenings, and time spent tending to others.

Joyce is survived by her brother, Delon Potter (Carol); sister, Jackie Sunde (Dick); sister-in-law, Sue Gorden; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her parents, Jack and Betty, and brother, Greg Potter.

Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched with her kindness, her strength, and her unwavering love for family and friends.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, October 30, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at Waukee Cemetery. Following the service, a gathering to celebrate Joyce’s life will be held at Barn Town Brewing, 9500 University Ave, Suite 1110, West Des Moines, IA 50266.
