Raymond Roy Miller, affectionately known as Ray, began his journey on April 3, 1940, in East Boyer Township, Crawford County, Iowa, where he was born to his parents Louie and Helen Miller. He was baptized in the Zion Lutheran Church and graduated from Manilla High School.
After graduating high school, Ray would go on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army and continued his service by being actively involved in the VFW and VFW Color Guard. His dedication to his country was a cornerstone of his life. Ray would marry the love of his life, Gail, on April 23, 1980 in Urbandale, Iowa.
Ray was a dedicated crane operator and heavy equipment operator with the US Government and the private sector. He was also a proud member of the Union of Operating Engineers #953. Ray had a passion for fishing, tinkering in his shop building and fixing things, and hunting. These hobbies brought him immense joy and fulfillment throughout his life.
Ray departed from this world on April 28, 2024, peacefully at his home in West Des Moines, Iowa, surrounded by his loving family. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Ray leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by many. He is survived by his devoted wife Gail Miller of West Des Moines, IA; son Joe Miller of Vail, IA; daughters Debbie (Jerry) Miller of Coffeyville, KS; Linda (Robert) Sloan of Kansas City, MO; Phyllis Booley of Johnston, IA; and Dawn (Matt) Sassatelli of Urbandale, IA. Additionally, he is survived by seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and eight nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Louie and Helen Miller; son Robert Miller and brothers Marvin, Leo and John Miller.
In remembrance of Ray's remarkable life and contributions to his family and community, a military committal service will be held on May 8, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel.
Raymond Roy Miller will forever be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his work, love for his family, and passion for serving others. May he rest in peace knowing that he leaves behind a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
