Richard "dick" George Smith

Richard "Dick" George Smith passed away at the age of 83 on March 20, 2018 at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. Dick was born to Frank Edward and Rosalie (McFadden) Smith on January 29, 1935 in Storm Lake, IA. Dick graduated from Britt H.S. before attending Buena Vista College. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country from 1956-1958. On November 4, 1958, he married the love of his life, Marian Nedved, in Duncan, IA. Dick worked as an insurance salesman for multiple insurance companies throughout his career. He resided in Waterloo, Mattoon, IL, Iowa Falls and most recently Waukee. Dick enjoyed playing golf, playing cards and being active in the Knights of Columbus. He earned his private pilot's license and was a member of the Iowa Falls Airport Board. Dick was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Green Bay Packers. Dick is survived by his loving wife Marian; children Melanie Mitchell, Tom Smith, Vicki (John) Loebig, Ed (Julie) Smith, Mary (Randy) Van Essen and Greg (Melanie) Smith; grandchildren Amanda, William, Brendan, Zach, Casey, Jordan, Bailey, James, Nick, Sesha, Jessica, Awais, Jacob, Ben and Lia; great-grandson Parker; siblings Francis A. (Tony) Smith, Mille McFadden Smith and Linda (Smith) Kuhn and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dick was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Rosalie and siblings Virginia (Kendrick) Hisel, Myrle (Smith) Norris, Vernon (Bud) Smith, Frank (Leo) Roethler, Leslie Smith, Vivian (Smith) Monson and Francis John Smith. Visitation will be held Friday, March 23, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., both at Ernst Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Private Interment at Iowa Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a yet to be determined organization.
