Sheryl L Castings

Sheryl Lyn Castings, 75 of Waukee, Iowa, passed away at her home on Sunday, November 20, 2022.

Sheryl, the oldest of four children, was born to Douglas and Bernadine (Schumann) Hickok in Independence, Iowa on February 11, 1947.  On June 21, 1991, she would go on to the marry the love of her life, John Castings, in Ames, Iowa.  Sheryl raised her family in Vinton and Cedar Rapids before moving to the West Des Moines and Waukee area where she has made her home for the past 30 years.

Sheryl retired from MMIC after a long career as a litigation paralegal.  She was a woman of deep faith that enjoyed women’s Bible studies, fellowship with small groups and couples and truly had a servant’s heart which could be seen in the multiple capacities she held in her church and community over the years.

Sheryl and John enjoyed rooting on the Iowa State Cyclones and the Iowa Wild.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling with her husband.  Sheryl was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and took great pleasure in the tradition of making Christmas Eve extra special for her family.

Sheryl is survived by her husband John of Waukee; children Lori (Brown) Montgomery of Cedar Rapids, Roxanne (Corey) Nikkel, Amy (Kevin) Larick and Rebecca (Brown) Steege all of West Des Moines, Justin (Cynnamon) Brown of Cabot, AR and Greg (Eve) Castings of Norwalk; 19 grandchildren, brother Randy (Debbie) Hickok of Cedar Falls and sister Kathy (Rick) Mixdorf of Waterloo.  She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Jeffrey Hickok and grandson Daniel Housley.

A memorial service will be held Friday, December 9, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Lutheran Church of Hope-Chapel (925 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines).  A reception and continued visitation will follow the service at the church.  Sheryl will be laid to rest at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel, Iowa.  Ernst Funeral & Cremation Services of Waukee has been entrusted with Sheryl's final arrangements.
