Sine Olesen

Sine Olesen, beloved aunt and cherished friend, passed away peacefully in Norwalk, Iowa, on July 30, 2026. She was born on April 1, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, a city whose vibrant energy she carried with her throughout her remarkable century of life.

Sine’s journey took her from Chicago to Spencer, Iowa, where she graduated from high school, and then onward to Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. Throughout her long and full life, Sine pursued her interests with passion and grace. She had a huge passion for making miniature doll houses, finding joy in their intricate details and craftsmanship. Over the years she had completed at least 10 dollhouses; leaving many of her family and friends in awe. Sine’s green thumb was profound; as she poured care and skill into her garden and took particular pride in her African Violets, which she entered into several competitions.

Beyond her personal passions, Sine devoted her time to causes she valued, including participating in book sales for Planned Parenthood. She also had an enduring love for classical music; which brought her great joy and comfort. Family was important to Sine, and her bond with her nieces grew even deeper after she retired and was able to spend more time with them. She spent several years in assisted living and many of her fellow residents and staff said she was feisty and funny, and her sarcastic edge brought laughs to many.

Sine is remembered by her nieces Nancy Rotter of Brownton, MN and Susan Herrin of Kinston, AL; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Knud Olesen; her mother, Kirstine Olesen; her brothers, Jack and Soren; and nephews John Olesen, Steve Olesen and David Olesen.

In keeping with her generous and giving ways, Sine donated her body to Des Moines University. No services are scheduled.
