Thomas Michael Schieffer

Thomas Michael Schieffer passed away at the age of 71 on Monday, November 30, 2020 at his home in Waukee, Iowa.

Tom was born on June 21, 1949 in Carroll, IA and joined the Marine Corps in 1967.  On June 9, 1973, he married the love of his life, Deborah Jean Utterback, and together they made their home in Waukee, IA.  Tom and Debbie were active and involved in everything their children did; from coaching t-ball, basketball and soccer, refereeing and boy and girl scouts.  He worked for Iowa Workforce Development for 36 years before retiring in 2013.  On day one of his retirement, Tom began watching his now seven year old grandson every weekday and they have been best friends ever since.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Delores Schieffer.  He is survived by his wife Debbie; children Greg and Krista; grandson Thomas; siblings Steve (Diane) Schieffer of Creston, IA; Scott (Colleen) Schieffer of Lacrosse, WI; Terry (Julie) Schieffer of Creston, IA; Jane (Kevin) Mahan of Creston, IA; Mark (Alice) Schieffer of Maryville, MO and Jodi Mobley of Creston, IA.  There aren't enough words to describe the love we hold for Tom or the love he had for his family.

For everyone who knew and loved Tom, his life was a testament to his values and principles.  He held strong to his beliefs and loved his wife and family every waking minute.  In honor of his memory, we are asking you to remember to have patience when you're tested, devote time to your family, don't ever be too busy to say yes and spend your time making memories with the people who you love; as you'll be thankful for every one.  His physical absence will be ever present but all the memories we shared with him will keep him ever present in our hearts.  We love you now and forever Tom, Tommy, Dad and Grandpa.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, services will be private and will take place on Friday, December 4, 2020 at Graceland Cemetery in Creston, IA.  Memorials may be made in Thomas' memory to Waukee Fire Association, 130 SE LA Grand Parkway, Waukee, IA 50263.
